Face off

One of the biggest differences between Firmenich and IFF lies in what they produce - the raw materials. And this, indeed, reflects in the style of the perfumers at each house.

Firmenich has the best R&D in the business today which gives them the edge over their competitors. They have new synthetics that are kept secret and used exclusively among themselves. These materials are called captives and are given this special status for different reasons but most likely because of the capability to add a magic touch to the composition of a fragrance. To learn how to use a new material takes some time, even for an experienced perfumer. A Firmenich perfumer will not only have the privilege to explore the secret but to make it part of his/her style of perfumery.

Though IFF may not have any as many captive materials today, and their R&D is in need of a resurgence, they have the L.M.R. (Laboratoire Monique Rémy) in Grasse. L.M.R. produces many of the best natural raw materials in the industry and is known for supplying exclusive materials for Chanel. As a matter of fact, some Firmenich perfumers envy IFF perfumers for that, and it comes to no surprise that IFF perfumers have the highest knowledge and skill to use these best naturals.
