一昨日、久しぶりにチャンドラー・バールからのメッセージが留守録に残っていた。
面倒なので放っておいたら、翌朝メールがふたつ。案の定、頼み事だ。
そんなことがあって、香水や調香師に関する投稿を随分としていなぁと思ったので、ちょっとだけ．．．
チャンドラー・バールといえば、ルカ・トゥリンを有名にした「匂いの帝王」を出版後、昨年までニューヨークタイムズの香水評論家として定期的に香水や業界に関する記事を書いてきた。
世界で初めての香水評論家になるという話が決まった時も、『実は話しておきたい事があるけど．．．』といって電話がかかってきたのを覚えている。
香水評論家なんて世の中は必要としていないよぉなんてことも言えないし、『いいじゃないの！』ぐらいの白々しいことしか言わなかったように記憶している。
評論家先生の仕事は数年続いたらいい方だろうと思っていたら、昨年末コロンバスサークルにあるアートとデザインの美術館に新設された世界で初めての嗅覚芸術センターのディレクターに就任した。上手な転身だ。
嗅覚が芸術として成り立つか？ 答えは『否』。今度の新しい肩書きは、十年も持てば大成功と言えるだろう。そうは言いつつも、友達として一肌脱ごうじゃないかという気持ちではいる。
