Being Greek in times such as these is certainly no simple matter. With bankers demonising us, politicians patronising us and the international media reducing us to an image of poverty and suffering, it can prove to be very difficult to convince anyone that not everything in Greece has been destroyed. Undoubtedly the last few years’ austerity policies have led to the suffering of many and long lists social welfare and human right issues that need to be urgently addressed — with that said, there seems to be a bias towards depicting Greece, and particularly Athens, as a place full of dereliction, conflict and fear. As journalist Nikos Vatopoulos points out in a recent article for the Greek newspaper Kathimerini, ‘‘almost all photographs reproduced by international news agencies about Athens depict its dark side,’’ something which in turn affects the way the locals themselves see and experience their own lives, where for Vatopoulos, a culture of ugliness has become ‘‘a second skin over the city.’’
