It wasn’t quite “The Brady Bunch,” but Robin Maguire and Marc Schaberg’s house hunt did involve two single parents, six children, a blended family and a midcentury home in Southern California. And the renovation phase had a sense of urgency, because Ms. Maguire, who worked in real estate development before becoming a novelist and painter, had given up her house to live with Mr. Schaberg, a film financier, in his cramped post-divorce apartment.
